Information Update
"The Day
Incident"
09/13/09
The fire
has crossed to the east of Old Highway 99 this
afternoon. Firefighters are working aggressively to keep
the fire from spotting to the east of I 5.
The hot
dry weather, combined with extremely dry fuels continues
to create extreme fire behavior. Burnout operations
supported by aircraft are being used in an effort to
slow the fire as it moves toward I 5. Crews and engines
are positioned along I 5 and are prepared to take
immediate action if the fires spots across the freeway.
-
Currently there are no evacuations in place.
-
Interstate 5 will reopen when safe conditions are
assured.
-
Firelines on the north end of the fire near White
Mountain are holding well.

Dense
smoke from the fire is affecting a wide area including
the Interstate 5 corridor. Motorists should use caution
when traveling through this area. The potential exists
for the wind to change and come out of the northeast. If
this occurs smoke could impact the communities of
Fillmore and Piru.
Forest
Service investigators have determined that the Day Fire
is human-caused, and that it resulted from a member of
the public burning a small amount of material within the
Los Padres National Forest. The investigation into the
cause of the fire is continuing and potential suspects
and witnesses are being interviewed.
Out of
concern for public and firefighter safety, an emergency
fire closure has been imposed in the general area of the
Day Fire. The closures include:
-
The
eastern half of Sespe Wilderness and adjacent lands
in Los Padres National Forest and Angeles National
Forest lands west of Interstate 5 and south of
Hardluck Road
-
Pyramind Lake Recreation Area and Oak Flat area
-
Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area
-
Gold
Hill Road
-
Smokey Bear Road at Interstate 5.
